What Is an IIN Number?

Understanding Issuer Identification Numbers and how they differ from BINs.

IIN — The ISO 7812 Standard

The Issuer Identification Number (IIN) is the standardised term defined by ISO 7812 for the first 6–8 digits of any payment card. It uniquely identifies the card-issuing institution — whether a bank, fintech, or other financial entity.

IIN vs BIN — What's the Difference?

IIN and BIN refer to the exact same digits. BIN (Bank Identification Number) was the original industry term. ISO renamed it IIN because modern card issuers include non-bank institutions such as digital wallets, fintechs, and government programs.

What an IIN Reveals

An IIN encodes the card network (Visa, Mastercard, etc.), the issuing institution, the country of issue, the card type (credit, debit, prepaid), and optional tier (classic, gold, platinum). No personal cardholder data is included.

IIN Length — 6 vs 8 Digits

Historically, IINs were 6 digits. In 2022, ISO 7812 expanded support to 8-digit IINs to accommodate the growing number of card issuers globally. This checker supports 6, 7, and 8-digit inputs.

Yes. IIN and BIN refer to the exact same digits. IIN is the current ISO 7812 standard term. BIN is the older, widely used informal term. Functionally they are identical — both describe the first 6–8 digits of a payment card.

How do I find the IIN of a card?+

The IIN is simply the first 6, 7, or 8 digits of the card number printed on the front or embossed on any credit or debit card. Enter those digits into the IIN checker above to look up the issuer details.
